Entering Your Eighth House
Part 8 of a 12 Part Series

by Victoria Schneider

House number eight follows house number seven, the house of relationships!  House number eight is about relationships as well, although in a different way.

This house is the area of life where we face ourselves.  Who AM I -- by my SELF -- without MERGING with another?  That is the operative question.

In this culture and in many cultures in the world, we are taught that we must become powerful, we must align ourselves with those who have power, that we alone are nothing without a powerful counterpart, be it a person or a business, a place or an object.  That concept is the epitome of the distortion of the eighth house work we must do.  Where does your power come from?

We all realize consciously or unconsciously, on a soul level that we want to grow.  How we go about “doing our growing” is determined by many factors within and about us:  physical, emotional, mental and spiritual.  We’ve been encouraged to align ourselves with the persons, places, things and conditions that will promote our growth.  Aligning yourself with them is one thing, attempting to BECOME the “other,” is another.  Or worse still, allowing the “other” to have power OVER you in YOUR  an attempt to gain power is perhaps one of the most insidious distortions that we can allow.

For each of us, our power comes from within.  We come through lifetimes of learning various lessons, (or NOT learning those lessons).  And even though we come into our lifetimes as infants, we do not come with blank slates.  We come programmed from the past with all manner of information and propensities that show up in our personalities and emotions.  The personalities that we have are no accident.  We are equipped with what we need in order to FACE LIFE and BECOME WHO we INTENDED to become.  That being said, we DO NOT know EVERYTHING.  That’s why we’re here;   to learn about that which we don’t know.

What we each think of as powerful depends on our individual evolutionary state.  Power has many definitions to people.  Some people think of money and status as powerful.  Others include rituals (and their definition of what is ritualistic) as powerful.  Relationships are a sign of power to many.  Death is an enormous sign of power to some people.  Obsessions with death and dying and fear of death and dying can be topics of power with which some want to merge. Some feel that if they can just “beat” the dying process, then they are powerful.  Bodies of knowledge bring the notion of power to many and the topic of sex and sexuality evoke tremendous interest within those who see themselves more powerful because of sex.

Add to the eighth house the topic of power and we have to include in that the kinds of power.  Are you one who thinks in terms of power OVER or power WITH another?  That is very telling.  “Power over” would mean that a certain kind of covetousness is included within one’s definition of how power should be attained or enacted.  “Power with” means that one thinks of the other as an equal and each side brings to the table, viable ways of being that will bring out the best in both parties and bring a sense of sustainability to the relationship so the neither party is solely dependent upon the other.

The soul has two desires:  the desire to separate from God/Goddess/All That Is/Divine Source and the desire to go back to/merge with God/Goddess/All That Is/Divine Source.  Again, any action that brings about the former, is of the ego, any action that brings about the latter is of the soul, unless one has consciously “sold his/her soul” for power.  (That is a paper in and of itself.  Jeffrey Wolf Green, the father of Evolutionary Astrology has written an amazing paper on the power of evil and selling the soul.  It’s not an easy read in that the topic is a difficult one, however, it is eye-opening, informative, and telling.)   Working in the most BENEVOLENT way for the GOOD OF ALL CONCERNED is THE WAY TO GO!

The EIGHTH HOUSE is about MERGING!  With WHOM and with WHAT do you merge?  The ULTIMATE merging is with God/Goddess/All That Is/Divine Source.  Merging with that which takes you from Divine Source is an egoic merging.  What brings you back to God?  This question does not infer that you must be religious or be involved with a church.  However, religion is a path back to the Divine, only IF it honors those whose path to God is different.  Whenever the path to the Divine includes malevolence, rest assured it is NOT of Divine Source.  It is of separation.  It is of the ego.  The Ego is not a bad thing.  We could not say out names without our egos.  However, when our egos conceive of a perceived THREAT to what WE feel is our security, there is resistance.  Then the true colors of the individual show with whom they desire to merge.  Again, it is telling.

None of us is perfect.  How we confront and analyze ourselves is speaks volumes.   The things about which we ask “WHY?” give us a huge perspective of ourselves.  It is about personal as well as transpersonal growth.  That is the job of the eighth house.  Is it only about you and those closest to you?  Can you see that people are different?  Can you honor that everyone has “their” reasons?  Do you question severe conventions?   Do you ask, “What motivates the human condition and consciousness?”  These are telling questions.  How does your eighth house move you?  Your chart holds the key to what is in your eighth house.  The sign on the cusp of your eighth house and the planets therein will reveal so much to you.   Your soul wants to grow.  That’s why it came here.  You are a powerful being.  How will you use that power?
