Entering Your Sixth House: Humility, Work, Service
Part 6 of a 12 Part Series

by Victoria Schneider

Humility, Service, Discernment -  these are but three sixth house words.  They are not words we use often these days.  They are not popular words.  They are not "sexy" words. They don't seem to lure the average person. In fact, "humility, service discernment" tend to fall on deaf ears in today’s world. Humility, Service and Discernment are sixth house words.  WHY?

The first three houses (areas of life) of the zodiac (known as quadrant I – continuing along counterclockwise) deal with inner self-awareness.  The second quadrant deals with inner awareness of the outside world.

The Sixth House, governed by the sign Virgo, which is a sign that helps us "discern" our personal and soul growth by being of service in the world.  We learn to discern what is and what is not necessary to our soul growth.

There are many other facets of the sixth house we can cover, however, they go deeper into the workings of the sixth house.  Let's begin with these three:  Humility, Service and Discernment.  For these three attributes lead each and every one of us to our deeper selves.

HUMILITY has its reasons and purpose.  Humility happens to each and every one of us when we don’t pay attention to the subtle messages that enter our psyche.  Our world doesn’t promote listening to the subtleties,  it promotes the opposite which include:

  • Work to make the “big bucks”
  • Compete…compete, compete.  Competition is about WINNING.  Produce, produce, produce!!!
  • SURVIVE – It’s about survival of the fittest
  • Grab the gusto – you only “go ‘round once!”
  • Outshine your opponent.
  • Rule with anger and sarcasm….don’t let ‘em see your “soft side”

With most of the world operating in this mind-numbing sea of directives, none of which create self-nurturing, with a positive bent towards the human potential, is it any wonder why, after trying to live up to this madness, this competition, this false sense of self, we are “humbled” via:

  • Illness
  • Job Loss
  • Loss of spouse, friendship,

In other words, we have to face a crisis…and the CRISIS serves to humble us to become who we REALLY are.  If after crisis, we remain the same, our sixth house needs adjusting.  Crisis comes to give us the following messages:

  • Rest the body
  • Rethink the lifestyle
  • Rethink the job
  • Rethink the relationship
  • Rethink the response and way of being.

And the real issue is what the person does with the crisis.  The real answer is how the individual approaches the crisis; how well he/she handles all and everything concerned; the way the emergency is approached and the manner in which one relates to others in the crisis.    If the setback is faced with courage, optimism and faith we can then say they have achieved personal development.  Humility serves that purpose; to provide an opportunity to evolve with grace.  It’s not what you say, it’s how you say it.  And it’s also not only what you say and how you act, but what your intention is.  That’s rich sixth house stuff.

WORK isn’t only a “job”.  Work is how you contribute your very best toward the good of the whole.  How is it that you SERVE.  This does not portend that you be a slave to your work.  This is about SERVICE with the intention of doing good for another, be it a single person or an entire community.

We have opportunities every single day to face small crises.  They come in the form of traffic jams, inconsiderate drivers, answering the alarm clock, intolerant co-workers or bosses.    Our attitude toward these “small crises” determines how we serve.  If we work resentfully, we take small steps backward.  The world does not owe anyone a living.

SERVICE is a quality that must come willingly because there is a need to serve; not because there is huge money involved or because one will receive extra kudos or attention for their service.  One’s deepest sense of worth comes in how one serves another.

In short, the sixth house is a testament to how one handles conflict in one’s life.  When one can handles the sixth house tests, she/he is truly ready to be in honest “relationship” with another.  “Relationship”….that would be the 7th house…and that is for next time.

Each house in the zodiac complements the one following it….each house leads us onward and upward on our evolutionary ladder, if we but do the work and stay the course.   In house six it’s about coming to terms with our self and eliminating the desire for ego-glorification.  If one cannot get beyond one’s ego…humility brings us the opportunity to get there.  How do we look at the challenge?  Is it devastating, en-angering, enraging or is it illuminating and transforming?  Only you will know.  Allow your sixth house to show you.
