Have you ever known someone or been with someone who has very sensitive feelings that then get expressed through their emotional body? Have you ever known someone who is highly intuitive - who just "knows" about or "senses" a situation or person even before they've gotten to the heart it the issue or conversation? If so, you've most likely been in the presence of strong Cancerian energy either by their Sun sign, influential Rising Sign, or because they have lots of planets in the sign of Cancer or the fourth house...OR...because they have many aspects to the sign of Cancer.
Whatever the reason, depending on how emotionally self-reliant that person is, you could either be very impressed with their ability to perceive OR, you could be in for an emotional roller-coaster ride.
How can someone so sensitive, protective and intuitive also drive you to distraction?
First of all, the archetype for Cancer, for those who really know the sign, conjures up many visions within each definition. Cancers are known to be very sensitive, very moody. Cancer is a water sign, (each sign is connected to an element: earth, air, fire and water) and because of that, the strongly influenced or focused Cancer FEELS more acutely than say, people who have very little “water” in their chart. Some folks have stronger “air influence – mental influence in their charts while others have stronger “earth” – grounded practicality or “fire” influence – more spirit and zest for what’s important to and for the self.
Again and again I say in just about each article, that NO ONE is STRICTLY THEIR SUN SIGN! You can have your SUN in CANCER and not be able to relate to what I will say in this article BECAUSE you have an entire chart that shows more air, fire or earth energy….however, if you are a CANCER SUN, chances are that you’ll be amenable to much of this information. I’m NOT a Cancer Sun I’m a Capricorn Sun however I have two houses (areas of life in my chart) that are strongly influenced by Cancer. See how it works?
The most important point about Cancer is that the archetype embraces one’s intuition, feelings and emotional body therefore, in evolutionary astrology when we talk about Cancer we bring out the importance of learning, THROUGH the sign of Cancer, all about becoming EMOTIONALLY SELF-RELIANT. That’s an enormous task. For some it is easier than others – it depends literally on one’s personal state of evolution. And there are 4 different evolutionary STATES of being, with 3 stages per STATE, so you see, no two Cancer Suns are created equally – or let’s just say that everyone will experience Cancer in THEIR chart differently from the next person. Still, the archetype remains and the definitions affect ALL of us to one degree or another.
Let’s talk about some Cancerian “ways of being”. You may identify with all or none or some of them. There are reasons for that, too, but it’s beyond the scope of this tiny article.
- CANCER is PROTECTIVE: Think about it. The symbol for the sign of Cancer is the crab. What does the crab do? It carries its house on its back. All of its possessions go wherever it goes. It wants the security of protecting itself in familiar surroundings wherever it goes because inside the “shell-house” is a very succulent and tender underbelly that can easily become prey IF the crab doesn’t protect itself. If it is threatened, it will either scurry away or hide in its shell. Many Cancerians “protect” their reasons, their way of being – even if the way of being doesn’t suit them well, they’ll become defensive out of fear and make excuses rather than give solid reasons for certain behaviors. Home and hearth means a lot to them and setting up housekeeping is very important. Usually the kitchen goes up first. It’s the hub of the house for a Cancer.
- CANCER is FEELING: Cancers are very sensitive to words, actions, and intentions of others. Because they are so intuitive (water sign), their sense of “clairsentience” – clear feeling – can be very finely tuned giving them an ability to read other’s frequencies or energy, rather than just listening to the words one says….it fits in with a quote that I heard once….and I have to say it’s anonymous for don’t know where I heard it…”You can hide your words, but you cannot hide your frequencies.” We ALL give off energy frequencies and the Cancer can pick them up relatively clearly depending on their evolutionary state of being. A comment made to perhaps a Gemini, could be taken completely to heart if heard by a Cancer. Again, they feel the need to protect and nurture and are quite often very literal. Sarcasm doesn’t bode well with a Cancer soul. They won’t think it’s that funny unless they’re prepared ahead of time and know it’s SUPPOSED to be funny!
- CANCER is INTUITIVE: Again, if one feels the need to protect oneself and is very sensitive to one’s environment and the people in it, there is a heightened sense of “inner knowing” that goes along with being a Cancer or having strong Cancer influence in one’s chart.
So how does this way of being work successfully and why do some of the other signs in the zodiac seem to lose patience with a Cancer? Allow me to quickly list some points that if followed throughout life, will help not only the influenced Cancer soul, but those around him or her who don’t have quite the same acute and sensitive tendencies.
- Because Cancer FEELs with such intensity, they need to
- Be careful not to overload their circuits. Taking in too much stimulation of any kinds whether it is food, drink, conversation, physical activity, money-spending – ANYTHING can overload their sensitivities.
- Because they can burn out easily with too much activity. Rest is essential.
- There is a real need to control their activities. Taking in too much puts them over the top. Consistency of schedule is fabulous. There is something to count on at the end of the day. Living in a constant state of unknowing exhausts them.
- Choosing GOOD FRIENDS is important to all of us, but Cancers in general need a few REALLY SOLID friendships they can depend on rather than go along with the “party-hearty” crowd which in most cases can be rather shallow and short-lived.
- There is a need to be in command of how much of life they let in at one time. Indiscriminately “going for broke” would not be a good thing for them.
- Living in survival mode isn’t healthy either so they need to sort of “ration-out” their defense mechanisms so that they can enjoy the world around them, not become defensive and exhausted and at the same time protect their very beautiful and sensitive selves.
What can they do? They need to create a few safe and acceptable defense mechanisms for themselves.
- Being SHY as a child is one such way. It’s acceptable to need mom’s closeness when you’re a child. It allows them to feel safe and experience the world little by little.
- Later in life, they may wear MASKS. It’s not that they are not honest they are simply not sharing everything about themselves. Sometimes you may even think that they’re the “life of the party”, when in fact, it is a mask to help them survive the onslaught of energies they feel around them.
- Sizing up one’s situation is ALWAYS a good idea. Cancers need to immediately get a sense for their environment and the people in it and listen to their intuition. ALWAYS LISTEN TO YOUR INTUITION!
- They need to protect their nervous systems. They are too sensitive not to. Anything that they intuitively KNOW is not good for them – they shouldn’t do it! Don’t GO to the party where the party animals are if party animals make you crazy. If you know that over-indulging with that third beer or even second glass of wine will upset your sensitive stomach and affect your highly attuned nervous system, stop yourself. Think of the crab in the shell. The crab doesn’t test the waters just for the hell of it. The crab KNOWS the DEPTH of the waters and honors the depth.
- Ultimately at some point in life the Cancer must discard the shell but this happens over time, when the Cancer knows him/herself well. Know your friends and acquaintances. Know who you can trust and not trust. Timing is everything and keeping to yourself until you’re positively sure that exposing the REAL YOU is completely safe is the more protected way to grow.
These are just some very, very brief insights into the world of Cancer and how beautifully deep and sensitive they are. In a world that is 75% consensus reality/mass consciousness, the gentleness of a highly attuned Cancer can be highly compromised. The world needs more of their delicate sensitivity. Perhaps the reason they cry or complain or appear moody to the rest of us, more so than any other sign, is their intrinsic attempt to stay alive on the planet – to fit into this world, that because of human ego and separating desires, has become a very harsh reality.
To the Cancers with whom I have had the BLESSING to share life, I say THANK YOU, you have taught this Capricorn that my feelings are exquisitely on and that I have a right to them. That in itself is an enormous gift that you have given this world.
