I love to think of the ninth house as the House of Knowing! What does that mean? The ninth house is traditionally about religion, spirituality, higher truths and philosophy but it's also about legal matters and information that expands your knowing and awareness.
The ninth house is also about travel...WHY TRAVEL? Well, traveling can expand your "knowing" and your awareness about life and other cultures, other people and other ways of being. It can give one another VIEW of life in order to broaden one's horizons and viewpoints.
House nine is the opposite of house three. House three deals with the concrete mind and house nine deals primarily with the abstract mind and because they are polarities of one another, they are always operative with thoughts migrating "back and forth". Left brain/Right brain; Fact/Statistics versus Intuition.
This house is about larger forces and a desire to think beyond logic, rationalization, statistics, facts and what can be "proven". Again...this depends on the "Evolutionary STATES of CONSCIOUSNESS," which means that not everyone is "conscious" in the same way.
We are all born into a certain "model of society" via our families of origin. What happens when we "outgrow" the model? That's your ninth house calling you.
So what ABOUT the model you grew up with? Stephen Forrest, Evolutionary Astrologer and author of “The Inner Sky: The Dynamic New Astrology for Everyone,” gives the example of a person growing up in a stereotypical American household – hotdogs, apple pie, checkered plastic tablecloths at picnics – this person joins the Peace Corps, moves to the Amazon and lives with indigenous tribes that eat grubs, have rigid rules and rituals, don’t bathe and have NO CLUE what a hot dog is. After living with them for a while, the American learns that people in these tribes in fact DO have intelligence, compassion and sensitivity and our Peace Corps volunteer begins to live and UNDERSTAND (9th house) not ONE but TWO different MODELS of being. Steven calls it “STEREO CONSCIOUSNESS!” What a GREAT TERM!
Models are just THAT! Models! There are COUNTLESS models; some more benevolent than others, but ultimately the question is: Is a model just as benevolent as YOURS, but vastly DIFFERENT than yours, a BAD THING? Since the ninth house deals with “higher truths” and deeper questions, allow me to pose a few.
- Whose reality is it anyway?
- Do you look at life at 30 the same way you did at 18? Do you look at life at 65 the same way you did at 45?
- Have your “knowings” changed since you were a kid?
- Do you expect everyone to believe the same thing you believe?
- What if the don’t?
- Are you addicted to the model you grew up with? Have you kept what works and left the rest behind?
- Are you willing to understand that perhaps what works for you now may not work for you in five years?
- Are you living in a world you have outgrown?
- Do you play the same “tapes” over and over OR, are you enticed by and excited to listen to new” tapes?”
In the second paragraph I mention that travel is associated with the ninth house. That does not always mean physical moving from one place to another. One can travel without physically moving; that’s called “traveling within!” That kind of traveling is probably the longest journey you’ll ever take…but OH! What a FABULOUS and EXCITING journey to take --- The Journey to the Center of YOU!
Once you begin to realize that YOU are the architect of your own life, once you realize how AMAZING your thoughts and especially your FEELINGS are and how they literally DRIVE your life… You are ON YOUR WAY ---ON YOUR JOURNEY. This is where you stretch and grow and expand—this is where you get to KNOW yourself.
Read the above questions over and over… come back to them from time to time. There are more…but I need not ask them of you. Once you contemplate these questions…more will follow—from within you. That’s when you’re working your ninth house….or should I say that your ninth house is “working YOU?” Let it stretch you! Let it challenge you! Let it teach you! OR NOT! And if NOT…keep all the possibilities that are within you tucked away in your “outgrown world.”
Remember the old expression, “Don’t throw the baby out with the bath water.”? If you are willing to acknowledge what from your past is worth keeping and what definitely needs to go, this is ‘stereo consciousness.” Are both speakers on?
